While its moniker remains undisclosed, this ‘mid- to full-size’ truck is poised to make its global debut later this year, ready to contend with the likes of the Toyota Hilux and the Ford Ranger. Initially, it will roll out with a PHEV powertrain, with a fully electric iteration anticipated to grace the lineup in the near future.
Despite its shrouded facade, the prototype offers glimpses of its design cues, reminiscent of industry stalwarts. The vertically stacked LED headlights, akin to those adorning the Ford F-150, encircle a rugged grille, concealed beneath the vibrant camouflage. Noteworthy features include a sturdy skid plate adorning the front bumper, sculpted fenders, and imposing taillights reminiscent of the VW Amarok.
BYD characterizes this forthcoming model as a ‘mid- to full-size truck,’ hinting at a slightly larger stature compared to the Ford Ranger and other counterparts within the one-tonne pickup segment. Sporting a dual cab configuration, it promises seating for five occupants alongside a capacious bed. Reports suggest that the interior will be outfitted with cutting-edge technology, aligning with BYD’s esteemed passenger lineup.
The automaker has affirmed the truck’s status as an NEV (new energy vehicle), embracing the realm of PHEVs and EVs. The prototype, featuring dual ports on the rear fenders, signifies its PHEV orientation—housing both a charging port and a fuel cap.
Projections for the PHEV version anticipate a combined range exceeding 1,000 km (620 miles), with a zero-emission range hovering around 100 km (62 miles). Speculatively, power may derive from a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine complemented by dual electric motors, delivering adept AWD capabilities.
Anticipation mounts for the forthcoming EV variant, anticipated to share akin specifications sans the gasoline engine, flaunting a beefier battery pack. Rumblings suggest the potential inclusion of an active hydraulic suspension system.
While Chinese regulations pose constraints on pickups, BYD steers its focus toward global markets for this forthcoming marvel. Confirmed for launch in Australia, a stronghold for midsize pickups, it eyes potential expansions across Asia and South America, aligning with BYD’s expansive vision.
Though an official debut date remains undisclosed, the PHEV variant is slated for a premiere by 2024’s end, with the EV variant possibly trailing in 2025. In the arena of electrified pickups, BYD’s contender not only squares off against the Ford Ranger and the Toyota Hilux but also braces for competition from the Isuzu D-Max BEV, anticipated to join the fray in 2025.
